Polishing a Limestone Tiled Kitchen Floor with Tile Doctor Burnishing Pads in Alloway

Before starting any work, I paid a visit to the property to give the floor a thorough inspection which highlighted several problems including scratches, a dull and worn finish, dirty grout and deep-seated dirt. I used this to create a renovation plan and worked out a quote for the owner which was accepted.

Limestone Floor Grout Before Cleaning Alloway

Deep Cleaning Limestone Floor Tile & Grout

I started work by focusing on cleaning the grout and the Limestone which had both darkened with dirt. Limestone is a porous stone, meaning dirt and grime can seep into the surface over time. To safely clean it, a pH-neutral stone cleaner (since Limestone is sensitive to acids) was applied and let it dwell for a few minutes before being scrubbed in.

We then used a rotary machine fitted with a soft brush to lift dirt without damaging the stone. To clean stubborn stains along the grout lines I used a handheld power tool fitted with a brush. After scrubbing all the residue was extracted using a wet vacuum, followed by a clean water rinse to remove any remaining cleaner.

The next step was to burnish the stone using a set of Diamond encrusted pads of increasing grits that range from a coarse 400-grit to a very fine 3000-grit. The coarse pad removes light scratches and dirt from the stone and the finer pads build up an appealing polish.

The pads are fitted to the rotary machine and are run across the whole floor lubricating with water which darkens as the dirt is lifted out of the stone. Each pad is moved slowly across the floor with the machine leaving small rings on each pass. The floor is then rinsed and all the slurry with a wet vacuum after each pad.

Sealing Limestone Tiles

The floor was left to dry off overnight and I returned the next morning and set about sealing the floor with Tile Doctor Colour Grow which is a colour enhancing impregnating sealer that soaks into the pores of the Limestone protecting it from within. The sealer will ensure any dirt remains on the surface where it can be easily cleaned away. Once applied, the sealer was allowed it to fully absorb into the stone before buffing off any excess with a soft White pad to leave a natural, even finish.

Once complete the Limestone tile and grout looked so much cleaner and had a healthy shine making the floor look so much brighter and attractive. For after care cleaning I recommended the use of Tile Doctor Stone Soap which is the ph-neutral stone cleaner I mentioned earlier.
